Generally, NYCERS membership is open to all employees of the City of New York and Participating Employers except those who are eligible for membership in the Police or Fire Department pension fund, or the Teachers or Board of Education retirement system.

1. PENSION – AN INVALUABLE BENEFIT
Your membership with NYCERS provides a guaranteed income for life upon retirement, as well as the opportunity to provide a continued retirement benefit to a designated beneficiary upon your death after retirement.
2. LESS TAXABLE FEDERAL INCOME
Because your required contributions are made on a tax-deferred basis from federal income taxes, it may lower your current federal taxable income.

Mandatory Membership vs. Voluntary Membership
Mandatory Membership
Membership in NYCERS is mandatory for all employees who are appointed and have completed six months in a permanent position in the competitive or labor class. Permanent employees may voluntarily join NYCERS during the first six months of employment. If they do not voluntarily join, membership will automatically be established after six months have lapsed.

For Tier 1 and Tier 2 members who wish to apply for NYCERS membership. You may also nominate a beneficiary for a death benefit payable if you die while in City service.
