| A new law adopted by Puerto Rico provides that all birth certificates issued in Puerto Rico prior to July 1, 2010 are invalid, effective September 30, 2010. Puerto Rico has established a process to apply for new birth certificates. Online applications are currently being accepted at www.pr.gov. Affected members who are near retirement should apply for a new birth certificate as soon as possible. Valid birth evidence is required to calculate retirement benefits. In lieu of a birth certificate, NYCERS may accept birth evidence alternatives. Some alternatives may require an affidavit. |
